Louis CK Live at the Beacon Theater

I haven’t seen this yet, I did just watch the clip, but mostly I’m just happy that:

1. It exists.

This special was funded fully by Louis CK and released by Louis CK. That’s big, that’s a comedian taking the risk to create and release this special himself, promote it himself to his fans, and hope that they don’t just steal it as he assumes all the risk. That’s a lot of faith in what seems to be a dying industry of entertainment. it’s really hard to imagine people paying for things anymore, when it’s all on bittorrent or rapidshare.

2. It made money.

Not even just broke even, Louis CK’s special actually made money. His risk paid off, he was able to pay his crew, presumable pay the venue, and upon releasing the video online, he was able recoup his costs and then some. This is big. In a world where this special is easy to steal (he even releases it region free, it’s just a file that you can download and share at will, which includes uploading it to pirate bay, where I’m sure it is) people still watched it and SUPPORTED him. Huge.

I want to list a third thing, but that’s really it. I’m glad it exists, I’m glad it makes money, and I’m glad Louis CK has so much support. His show is amazing, his standup is stellar, and I’m glad that people support him. Now I’m gonna stop being amazed by economics and the warmth of human kindness and download and watch this bad boy myself.
